The Apple Tree

“The apples blushed, as apples are wont to do, but she didn’t pay them any mind.”

The Apple Tree is an indulgent piece of work, full of things I love. Rosy apples, soft pinks, dreamy flowers. The whole piece grew from two colours on my palette, Potter’s Pink and Anthraquinoid Red. The Potter’s Pink is lovely, earthy and granulating. The Anthraquinoid Red is cool, bright and vivid. Apples seemed a perfect fit.

This painting came together as I was reading a lot of old Kelmscott Press poetry and story collections, and so I imagine it as an illustrated plate from an old book of stories.Who is this girl, and who—or what—is she looking at?
